I have a voucher code site which has been up and running for a few months now. Recently I had one of those light bulb moments as I realised something which I do when shopping online could be something that is causing me to lose conversions on my discount shopping site.

When I'm shopping around for something I will generally find what I want and from where, then I proceed to checkout and go right up to the page where they ask for a promotional code. It is at this point I generally start looking round for a suitable voucher code. I find one, copy and paste it across to the checkout page and hey presto, discount applied. While this works well for a consumer it's not so good for the discount shopping site owner. Visitors to my site may not be clicking through to the retailers site as they are simply copying and pasting the codes and consequently that all important tracking cookie isn't being dropped and I'm losing out on commission.

Should I be thinking about adding a click to reveal script to my site? Is there anything I should be considering if I add this to my site? Do you think a click and reveal link would likely improve conversions as a visitor would have to click to get the code and the javascript could then automatically open the target url in the process? I think there were some recent guideline updates regarding this practice, is it best avoided or would it need strictly policing? Suggestions and views appreciated.

Without a doubt this will increase conversions for you.

Personally i don't use this tactic on my main voucher code site, for a variety of reasons, one being it would take a fair amount of time to upgrade my current method of displaying codes, additionally if i implement it i'll need to ensure even greater compliance with IAB guidelines regarding VC sites, and thirdly i don't feel 100% comfortable with this method, i prefer to give the visitor the choice to click my links, rather than force them to.

I think from a business perspective click to reveal makes sense, i just feel a little uneasy about creaming this easy commission from a merchant / other affiliate. If you head over to a4uforum you'll find 100's of threads and heated debates about VC sites...

I don't particularly like this method but have been told by one merchant that whenever I do a code for them could I click to reveal it because it makes their life easier with a certain exclusive code.

I do however try and get the click if a user uses the mouse to copy a code. Andy, I'd also look at other ways to get the user through your links: simple 'Visit Site: url[dot]com' and 'click here to visit ...' seem to work well, even if no codes are present.

A Simple Click To Reveal Button

Code:
<input onclick="document.getElementById('165a').style.display='inline'; win = window.open('<!---destination url here-->','_blank','toolbar=1,location=1,directories=1,status=1,menubar=1,scrollbars=1,resizable=1'); win.blur();" type="button" value="Click Here to Show Code &#038; Visit Site" />
<p id="165a" style="display: none"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Voucher Code Here</strong></span></p>

Open Site On Attempted Copy

This is what I use in my comments which serve as the code listings. Probably bad coding - but it works for me.

Code:
<table WIDTH="369" HEIGHT="51" border="0">
<TR>
<TD  WIDTH="364" HEIGHT="49" BACKGROUND="<!---Image Location Of Button --->" STYLE="background-repeat: no-repeat;" align="center" onclick="window.open('<!---Destination URL--->','Store');return false;">
<p align="center"><FONT SIZE="+1" COLOR="blue" ><a href="<!---Destination URL--->" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><strong><br />Voucher Code Here</strong></a></FONT></p></TD>
</TR>
</TABLE>

Thanks. To be honest I'm not to keen on using the click to reveal either but if its the only means to an end then so be it. The IAB guidelines on the use of click and reveal links have a few rules to be followed which makes the practise of using them is even more tricky.

At the moment the links on my site say something like Click Here to Redeem this Offer I also like the idea about using something to open the merchants site if an attempt is made to copy the code. I think I'll try that approach first.

I think the IAB guidelines view 'click to reveal' and 'open when attempt to copy' as similar, so if using either method ensure you fully comply with other guidelines....

Personally I think the guidelines are poorly written and have too many ways around things.

Quote
Using “click to reveal code” and opening the site when no valid code is present or an offer/deal/sale is presented instead, without this being made clear before the click

So it's OK if wording on one's site says 'clicking here will open store'? even if there's no code valid, out of date etc... That's the way I read it anyway.

And what's the bit about 'start dates' on codes? Wrong in my eyes, as most merchants wouldn't want a code put out until it's live as this could impact on their marketing IMO

There is a way around the cookie problem of ensuring you get your conversion even if there is an existing cookie from another shopping site. Therefore you would ensure all click through to the merchants would more or less geniune a sale.
