I have one or two sites that - for various reasons - haven't gone live. If I want to make them live to provide some easy (probably not all that relevant backlinks) for one of my UK sites, what is the best hosting company for free or cheap hosting with regards to SEO backlinks I've found that Google will deindex free websites like weebly or Microsoft Office unless they have a lot of backlinks whereas sites on a "proper" server get indexed and stay indexed with virtually no backlinks.

I've got several accounts with hostgator, cheap as chips and good service in my experience anyway.
See the affiliate link at the top of the forum ;-)

Does it matter that hostgator are in the US (when targeting UK rankings)?

Not really in my experience.
Whilst a UK host might be preferable for big sites, lower response times etc, for rankings it does'nt seem to have any effect, if you are using a non country specific domain just make sure you set the target country in google webmaster tools ;-)

Cool. Which package with them would you recommend?

Does it matter that hostgator are in the US (when targeting UK rankings)? Would it look spammy to Google if you used a US host to host a website that is obviously local to a particular county/town in the UK?? - Again, I'm really interested in whether the backlinks to the main site would be discarded as spammy (I have a UK host for main sites).

the beauty of the internet is it allows us to access global services. Using a US based host simply because it's more cost effective than a UK host shouldn't be considered wrong by any extent. Getting penalised for using world wide services on the world wide web seems hypocritical to me.
but that's just an opinion.

Should a dedicated IP be bought with webspace?

I don't bother with them myself. (Other than for a few key sites)

I went with Hostgator yesterday for a site I'm working on with a dedicated IP. I can create unlimited websites on there although not sure if this will hinder the quality of the back links if they come from different sites on the same webspace.

Hostgator also do that SEO hosting package thing where you can move sites around to different IPs. If youre still concerned although from experience Google dont seem to be as harsh on the multiple IP links as theyd like you to think.
