The common sense thing is to repeat that Google don't  ban sites lightly - penalise yes ban no.  Personally If a client were to approach me with a banned site I'd give them a very wide birth because there's only one reason you get banned in the first place which is doing something worth banishment.  I guess that a company could plead they didn't understand what someone else is doing but if they're happy to let someone play around with their site (and their existence), which is rather like handing someone a mk47 just cause they ask you to, that for me is much worse!

Would be nice if g o o gle would send a message saying that it is going to do one or the other and give a site time to make the fixes. This one strike and your out without any notice would really suck.

I was emailed and even show an example of what code was wrong.. yourweb have you had something banned without a reason why..

I've read about loads of site being banned but most are for very good reason in which "gamming" the algo goes beyond reason... Should someone crossing every line get another chance ?

Sometimes they do it would be nice if they did it consistently and from a single source, I thought moving all the messages to the webmaster central was a great idea but it makes things very messy and hard for a third party to get the correct information.

Most companies that come to us are in this mess because that's exactly what's happened there are far to many companies out there using very bad practices for their "clients" and often using their clients sites as backdoors for more profitable ventures.

They get away with this because most clients are ignorant of how server and sites should work and have hired in (or thought they had) the professionals.

Agreed banned site fix problem request reinclusion if problem is unsolvable move domain. Penalties are not always informed and their is no method except reinclusion requests (which may or may not work) to let google know that you may or may not have fixed the problem.

Algorithmic penalties at least you have a chance as it will be fixed in the next ranking change but manual penalty could be months or just days.

Just updated the original post to include information about moving domains with penalties. Smiley as always I will try to keep the first post as up to date as possible. Though I can only really do that as and when we have clients coming to us with problems.

Hi,

Just thought I'd add my tuppence worth.
Back in 07, had a site hacked due to a wordpress vulnerability which was picked up after a couple of days as traffic spiked like crazy.
Alas; the damage had been done - we were out of google for 7 months.
Total absolute %$%^$^$%  Nightmare.

Moral of the story: if you are running a wp blog, make sure you always check for known vulnerabilities for the version you are running.

Penalties as opposed to banning
Google often applies penalties rather then actual bans again this is not something they do likely but still it might happen the most high profile cases have included BMW (For IP Cloaking - Resolved) and John Chow (Paid Links) who no longer ranks for his name. These penalties are manual and therefore reversible your best bet is to correct the problem and contact Google via webmaster console. Interestingly these style of penalties are normally against certain keywords so many sites don't notice the penalty instantly as their long tails are still getting searches. Manual penalties also don't automatically appear in Google webmaster centre so you won't have an idea that its happened.

Penalties seem more dangerous to me as you cannot tell easily if you have been penalized. You have given a very thoughtful insight into this issue specially highlighting the fact that Google can penalize certain keywords as well. Now my question here is, what if you were penalized but not for your mistake? Ok I can further explain it here. Suppose your competitors have launched a Google bowling attack on your site and you can see all the weird links pointing to your web site through a back link checker -- what can you do about it? Because these links are not under your control, it is not possible to do anything about them. Please reply.
