I'm sure we're all used to looking at awstats and webalyser, but I'm considering investing in Extreme Tracking for all my clients (the non public version of course).
I love they way it shows exactly where 'keyword traffic' comes from (ie, google, google images, yahoo, bing, etc...).
For example, awstats & webalyser tell me that a site was found for the keyword 'farm holiday yorkshire', but I have no idea which engine was used and checking all three I can't find it.
Extreme Tracking tells me it was Google, and I find my site on page 8 for that term, which isn't great, but at least I know where to look, where it's ranking, which webpage is displaying and with that info I can take steps to improve the position of my site for that keyword, where as the other two leave me in the dark.
it'll cost a fair bit to do it right across the board, so.....
is there a free alternative which give the same detailed info which is also private?

Not sure about the position for the kw, but i have been using a free mysql driven app for years now, it shows keywords, referals, SE's etc, and ofc its free and pretty easy to set up. I usually include it as standard on any site i build. http://www.tracewatch.com/

You hate the most successful search engine on the planet? The company that genuinely believes that the best way to be successful is to deliver a quality product? Stunning. I simply can't get my head around that at all.

it's a glorified yellow pages, nothing more... one uses it to find information, products or services... oh no... Google's launched a phone now, so it's like a phone book and phone all in one!
If/when Google goes tits up I'd just shift my focus to whatever search engine replaces it as the most popular.

Why would you have a problem with a successful and ethical company? I bet you've given plenty of money to unethical scumbag companies over the years without even thinking about it. Now you slag Google off because what... they're successful and they didn't even fuck anyone over to do it? It comes across as hating 'the man' for no other reason than that they're there to be hated. Give me a valid reason if you have one.

like i say, google is a search engine, a glorified phone book... for that purpose it's a good tool, but i have no interest in the majority of google's other tools/toys such as their browser, their phone, or their operating system when it arrives. Personally I think they're getting a bit big for their boots... then they'll change their name to Skynet and it's the end of humanity as we know it

Yeah, that's what comes across loud and clear but I think that's more a reflection of your attitude than an accurate statement about Google as a company. They're nothing like the scumbags at McDonalds, or Shell, or the Federal Reserve, or Nestle or any of the other unethical companies that put profit before everything else. Google are ethical and they care about the environment, their employees and the quality of their product and if they took over the world I wouldn't have a problem with that. They believe that if you have a quality product, people will come back. I work exactly the same way. The whole reason they provide tools like Google Analytics is to help people like us provide better quality websites that they can show to their users. (If I had to guess, based on my perception of your character as far as it's possible through the medium of an internet forum, I'd bet that you see the current CCTV situation as an infringement of or a future threat to our privacy, that you're not a fan of speed cameras and that you're against the ID card scheme. How did I do? )

CCTV is a proactive move to reduce crime, however it does not address the issues that cause crime, again it simply masks the real issues in this country. The id card was a complete joke from the start, as with CCTV is it the governments lame attempt to cover up with real issus, like the disasterous immigation situation. Anyway, back on topic, how did the twatch option work out for you Dave?

I partially share Daves views, in that i don't think it is healthy in any market for one company to yield such power across a market place.
I don't hate Google, hats off to them they have done a fantastic job of capturing market share and some of their tools are incredible and with many offered 'free' they offer a excellent service to millions of people.

By the way i think you've pretty much summed up my thoughts on this matter too, although CCTV (in its current use) doesn't particularly bother a law abiding citizen such as myself!
Anyway we digress, perhaps this discussion is best kept for another thread?

Anti-Google Dave.. I love you already Ironically, I binned extremetracking for one of my clients and we do use Analytics instead. I just felt that Analytics had more robust features. Obviously this was 3 years ago but I am just looking on the Extreme tracking website and it seems the same as what it was. having said that the new thing I noticed was the street map view of visitors. That could be a bit freaky in the future - *knock on door* "Hi you just visited my website would you like to buy our product?"
