I use wordpress for my blog and several other clients blogs. I find Wordpress easy to install, use and custom style. The one headache it has always given me is getting it fully search engine optimised, removing the duplicate content issues, unwanted indexed url's (trackbacks, feed links etc). I've tried several plugin's such as all in one seo, robots meta as well as playing about with the robots.txt file with mixed results. So recently I've stripped things right back to keep the blog structure as simple as possible.

What are the main pitfalls that someone must consider when installing or running a wordpress blog? Particularly when the blog starts to grow in size. Should I be worrying about the trackback links or feed links being indexed? Is this going to leak any link juice?

Feed links indexed is a bit of a no-no to me. I tend to use platinum seo which adresses most issues. Have a play with it if you haven't already.

The duplicate content aspect is not really an issue. My weblog is full of quotes that I have assembled from other sites. It's inevitable to get DC.

Visually my site needs cleaning up, but the SERP results are really paying dividends. I have overtaken Amazon on loads of its search terms. So I am seriously thinking about going into book promotion.  By building pages almost daily and by having a google alert set up on the site it gets crawled hourly. Leaking juice is a risk we all take, and personally and Webnauts agrees, don't worry about it. Your new content will counteract.

This article by Joost de Valk covers most things - http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/

I've followed his advice and used the Headspace plugin rather than All-in-one-SEO

As several people pointed out on my site review, I haven't fixed the H1/H2 thing yet, but it's next on my list Smiley

HTH

Hi Matt

It's a few months since I set it up, but IIRC the main benefit is less total plugins to maintain/update. Headspace has the functionality of several other plugins (including all-in-one) in one plugin. Yoast.com is well worth a read, IMHO he's the best for WP SEO stuff

Met Joost at the a4uExpo last week and I'll back that up, he knows his stuff - gave an excellent seminar on WordPress SEO. Also likes a drink  Cool Personally I prefer Platinum SEO over Headspace, but it's swings and roundabouts really.

Have a look at his plugin for altering your breadcrumbs and extra footer links in your rss feeds - for when it get's picked up in feed directories and scrapers.

Thanks Dan, Platinum SEO looks like it could be useful. I hadn't seen it before. The Meta Robots functionality looks useful, I had a separate plugin for that. As I build more and more WP sites, number of plugins becomes more of an issue

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of this article. At first glance it seems to be exactly what I've been looking for.

Thanks Dan, Platimum SEO looks to be a very useful plugin that goes beyond several that I already use. Cheers
