hey kgun,
I noticed your signature phrase and had to laugh:

"If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts."

I might update it to this though...
"
If the facts don't fit the seo myth, change the facts."

Of course its not merely a case of building a shed load of anchor text links for one keyword, everything you do needs to appear natural to Google. A site with 100 links based around a single keyword or phrase will show in the allinanchor results but it not likely to rank highly for a regular search.

Great thread. I'd never heard of this before, but it's definitely useful for checking out the competition and what to aim for!

Also, re your above statement, you'd suggest changing the keywords for signature links from forum to forum, rather than going after just a few specific keywords? Just checking this because I thought that would be the case but was assured by others that Google would still value them even if they're seen repeated in the same/similar format.
And do you think this changes if the forum employs nofollow? I know Google can still see these.

Hi all,

The allinanchor search is a fantastic tool for establishing how many directly competing sites there are for a given keyword. Be Warned tho! If you do more than a certain amount of allinanchor searches in a row (usually 17 for me) you will get a message pop up from google telling you that it thinks you are doing automated requests:

We're sorry but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users...

The long and the short of it is that you wont be able to do an allinanchor search for a few hours until you are forgiven and they let you crack on.

This doesn't seem to put you on a black-list or anything but is more of a temporary inconvenience. The best way to avoid this is to throw in a few 'normal' searches fo a while then carry on.

Hope that helps, the allinanchor search is a very useful tool and shapes a significant amount of my SEO.
