I'm trying to find out information on how the Google local business results work.

i have searched on this forum and found these threads:

http://www.davidcastle.org/BB/google-local-vt2275.html
http://www.davidcastle.org/BB/google-maps-vt2272.html

i have also found these articles on other sites:

http://www.smallbusinesssem.com/10-likely-elements-of-googles-local-search-algorithm/519/
http://www.semfire.com.au/blog/2007/08/07/pay-attention-to-google-local/

I'm interested to see what people have found or experienced with their listings in the local results.

Can anyone give any pointers for directory sites that Google take their information from?

I do alright with the Google Local listing and IMO it's worth being listed.

http://www.touchlocal.com/ is one place they take listings from looking at my listing, which does nicely in the serps.... Here , but it's best to list yourself with a weblink which takes about 2 weeks to go live.

And you can add a few different listings - just keyword spam your company name to something different.

And  - Google will send you a postcard once your site is accepted.

Well worth it.

Dont think its anything to do with directories at all?

Just sign up to local businesses through the Google control panel, they'll confirm your listing by phone or SMS these days as opposed to the postcards - which was a right old laugh with the Spanish postal service btw Smiley

this absloutely rocks, with one client we have effectively jumped 3 pages from #31 to #3 (our of 5 or 10  shown) in the Google.es Business listings at the top of Page 1.

we've been struggling a little with the G.es searches because the site is hosted in the UK and has no Spanish content

but a business listing seems like Google approval of your target geo-location and works well, in comparison to the "set your location" in webmaster tools  which as far as we can see does nothing at all to SERPS results.

About local business results, are they the same no matter where you are in a county or are the results dependant on the location from where you do the search?

In the local results, I am "A" in local business results for "seo kent" but is that because that is obviously the closest business location to me!?

The clues in the name on this one mate... local results are youre local results for the keyword. So if i search for just 'plumber' i get local Preston plumbers (for a while i was getting lees results and i had to change something but I've completely forgotten what that was).

If you search for 'keyword' without a location you should always get your nearest businesses by default. However, if i search 'seo Kent' i get Kent local results and i see you at A! Wahay!
