They are now showing location results as more normal results on page 1. How long as it been like this? E.g. "accountants in london".

Yes i noticed that yesterday morning... the map has shifted over to the right and the map listings appear between the 'top 3 ppc' and the natural results... initially i thought the page hadn't loaded properly, so after a couple of Ctrl+F5's I realised they'd been fiddling again.

me neither, a search today for 'solicitors in windsor' shows only 4 natural results below 6 places results... so even a top ten ranking doesn't mean page one anymore Sad

it rolled out on 27 October, good write up about it here

http://searchengineland.com/new-place-search-shows-googles-commitment-to-local-53990

it's basically merged the local algo with the organic one so sites that show in local and on the first page organically have gotten a good boost in some places.

they've been playing around with the spacings, sometimes showing 2 organic results above, sometimes all places listings, Ive seen the previous #1 & 2 organic listings at #9 and 10 over the weekend.

if you're just #7 organic and no places listing then you're f***ed.

here's an example of one we're looking at

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=london+bed+bug+control&pws=0&hl=en&num=10

the dead bed bugs site was previously at #5 organic and has been showing at either #2, 4 or 5 over the weekend depending on index and when and where you're looking from.

at this point its showing at #4 on .co.uk and #2 on .com seen from here.

http://www.google.com/search?q=london+bed+bug+control&pws=0&hl=en&num=10

there seem to be several different types of serp at the same time, ie on the .com example (link above)  you can see it's the pagetitles from the site, not the titles from the places listing the new merged system is showing

but here http://www.google.com/search?q=london+bed+bugs&pws=0&hl=en&num=10

its more like organic / places / organic

its pretty complex and massive news to local SEO

and this one, buildingjanitorial.com previously showed pos 6 in the local box and organic #38 is up 34 places on this phrase to show like this

http://www.google.com/search?q=commercial+cleaning+Fort+Worth&pws=0&hl=en&num=10

big opportunities to leapfrog here boys

from here advanced seo - what defines an "seo expert"?
