Google holds their Searchology event to introduce new features, and this year there are a lot of new toys to play with now and in the near future. For example, now when you do a search, at the top of the page you will see a new link labeled "Show Options". Go ahead and click on it and try the new features. Be sure to check out the Wonder Wheel.

For more info on the Searchology event and more new features see this blog post: http://www.dullest.com/blog/google-searchology-2009-search-options-google-squared-rich-snippets/

My personal take is that although the "Show Options" info is cool, I wonder how many people will notice the new feature. Will Google eventually make this the default search? What is the impact of this new search on SEO as we know it?

There's some pretty cool information there. I'll need some time to have a proper play about with it but first impressions are that it could be very useful particularly with keyword research.

Ooooh.... Its all change today! More keyword research possibilities but that's the only benefit i can see for my SEO work.

These new features encourage us to carry on doing what Google has been telling us to do for a while... Some very quick thoughts on how to optimise for those new options but non of it's new really:

› All results
Videos - SEOs have been recommending the addition of vids to sites for a while.
Forums - Add one if it's going to be beneficial, which we've known for a while.
Reviews - From what i can see, do some review pages and add "review" to the title tag.

› Any time - add regular content, which we've all known for a while.
 Recent results
Past 24 hours - keep up to date with latest industry news and offer it on your site - im thinking rss feeds!
 Past week
 Past year

 › Standard results
Images from the page - optimise your images
More text - make sure on page text is of a high quality and as enticing as possible.

Hello.

I was playing about with these yesterday.

The wonder Wheel is good for broad searches you want to narrow down. I can see that being the most popular.

With the More text option, do you guys think that it will come from the Meta Description tag if there is more than when it truncates or will it just take from the first piece of text the robots come across in the main body.

Overall these features are good and i like the fact they have kept it optional so you can use them when you think you need them, not when Google does!

The wonder wheel is just a development of the related searches bit on the bottom of the normal search? I feel a bit cheated...  Cry

There certainly is nothing 'wonderful' about it!! The bastards! They even made it rainbow colours to make us think it was something better than it actually is.  Cry
