I suspect that they are filtering results based on where their links are coming from to try and identify which country the site relates to.
They do that already. They also do that checking the origin of your IP (hosting). This is a story of about two or three years?

Ref.: http://www.uk-web-hosting-directory.org/ and http://www.highrankings.com/forum/index.php?s=6025e27c58ddeb333c22f3d2966c2583&showtopic=1636&st=0

So it does not seem to be that issue.

Is it not possible that they've amended their algo to place more importance on where the links are coming from though. ie US links to a .com UK carry less weight?

OK, this is my last comments about this issue.

If you are mainly targeting the UK local market try the following:

1. Stick to your native country for hosting: http://uk-web-hosting-why.blogspot.com/2006/11/changing-host-will-it-affect-my-google_09.html

2. Declare the language in your <html> tag: http://tlt.psu.edu/suggestions/international/web/tips/langtag.html and http://www.w3.org/International/articles/language-tags/Overview.en.php

3. Use a contact and about us page, adding there your postal address (no P.O boxes, Post Restant, or so ever), and additionally your telephone number.

4. Create a profile with XMDP and add it to your google sitemap: http://gmpg.org/xmdp/description and http://www.loadaveragezero.com/xml/xmdp

5. Add the <address> tag on all your pages (again, no P.O boxes, Post Restant, or so ever): http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_address.asp

6. Create a P3P Policy: http://www.w3.org/P3P/

7. Get more IBLs from sites hosted in the UK, and especially from sites with a co.uk domains.

If you do all above and you will not see success, then I must ask Google for further help. Wink

Excellent advice webnaughts!  Thanks.

I knew that Google rewards TLD's that are hosted on servers in the same country as the TLD but I can't see them penalising .com's, it would create havoc.

They'd have to phase it in really slowly and allow exisiting .com's to stay alive.  Then those .com's might become very desirable, nah, too many problems with that scenario methinks.

I got yesterday a message from a forum user, and he thanked me, as he said, that using the <address> tag, he saw great improvements in the uk local search, even if he has a uk domain.

Stay tuned. Smiley
