I am a newbie at this... I have come across some sites that offer to list my site on 400 directories for $199...

Would this be a good first step in my site link building process?

I know it is unlikely that they will be relevant links but as a first step would it be good or do you think these links would do more harm?

I've never used paid link building services because even if a high ranking reults from it it's going to be a weak ranking vunerable to search algorithm changes and that's not the type of ranking I want to create for my clients.

Your'e better creating genuine links that will survive Google slaps, create resilient rankings.

I usually start with using a paid service to manually submit my site to directories. Its not going to help you rank for anything competative, but certainly helps with indexing and will help on low comp kws. What i would add is, i have just had one of my sites submitted, the package i selected was 1000 directories for $18, which would seem to suggest the package you are considering is rather errm, over priced for a directory submission!

I'd have to agree with Nobby. I've used a paid submission service before for new sites to help stimulate the link building process, though it isn't going to get you ranking for much. I certainly won't pay $199 for 400 directories. I'd focus your time and energy on gaining good quality relevant links through content and link exchanges, articles and press releases.

If you want to spend that sort of money to get links I would use the money to get a load of decent articles written then submit them to several article submission sites. I can recommend MattInertia for this, drop him a PM.

I'll agree with Nobby and Caravan too, $199 is too high.

I do occasionally use a few cheap directory submission services but only to add a little to the backlink profile and only EVER using the company name as the title, anything other could appear spammy (in my opinion) in the eyes of Google.

Do many of these directories show up in the backlinks? And would they be such spammy directories that it could hurt a new site?? Would like to know for a site I've got coming up.
