Other than the importance of getting the word out about your website (be it via google or thanks to other happy users), there's also a matter of differentiating your business as unique and exceptional. One possible way to achieve this is by presenting your corporate image as being socially responsible.

This is where a new service, which I am proud to be working with comes in: donatemate.co.uk is a new service that lets the visitors to your website promote it using a simple "send to a friend" widget.

The incentive to the users is simple: they get to decide which charities the website owner will donate money to, based on their recommendations of your website to friends.

On the other hand, the website enjoys both the direct referrals from users and the positive image that results from their donations, as well as detailed statistics on the most-emailed pages on their site, and an analysis on the causes that are most interesting to their users.

Thanks,

Sharon

Hi Sharong,

Ive checked out the site (ive deleted the link drop im afraid). It's an interesting idea... Ill be interested to hear some of the other pros opinions and im sure we'll get a good discussion going here.

My 2 cents... Youre going to have to market the hell out of this to get it to work effectively. People will need to know what donate-mate is and how it works before they start using it. At the moment people email, IM, bookmark and use a HUGE variety of viral/social tools to inform each other about sites. Why would they pay any attention to the donate-mate icon when they can just hit the stumble thumbs up, add to facebook, or drop the link straight in an IM or email (etc)?

If you can build this up to be a well known brand then people will start using it to share content and donate but it might be a long road before you really hit it off. I guess what im saying is, youre entering a crowded arena so...

Hi Matt,

I agree - this is quite a challenge both because of the competition (god knows that practically every site nowdays suffers from a severe case of "iconistan"), and because its just as easy to copy and paste the link from the browser's address bar and drop it into one's preferred method of sending links to others.

The hopes are that the social added value to using DonateMate, i.e. - the knowledge that using this widget means that you're contributing to a good cause, will help popularize DonateMate among both users and site owners alike.

Well, if you market it right and make it incredibly easy to use I reckon it is a great idea!
