Quite a simple one here and we're not talking about EPCs or leads, just CTRs.

All things being equal what are the best ways (excluding forced clicks/iframes) of getting your visitors to click through links to other sites. These are normal web users and not us fools who live behind the screen!

Options.
  • 1. Normal link text with normal font size saying something like "visit xxxxx"
  • 2. Banner ads with nice images and content
  • 3. Normal link text with oversized font saying something like "Click Here to visit xxxxx"

I've started to look into this recently and am waiting for a long on stats to make up my mind, but what is the general opinion if any?

if someone offers me 5cents for every visitor.  I think I am wasting time and money unless I put something like this on site.

click me gif test

I would ad no text if the wording contradicted the specific theme of the page (no point confusing the adsense search) -   If the theme was what I was targeting for adsense, I would ad some.

I would steal the best image from the page I was directing the link it to - then give the gif a name that suited.
(this case click.gif)

then I would ad something like - Go on try the link!

Looking at the stats on my Discount Shopping site its a mixture of normal link text and the larger link text but the larger link text does have the edge.

Admittedly I don't add a click reference to all links on the site due to laziness, maybe a should review this as the results could be very helpful. Let me know your findings Dan.

Andy (and others) I've found the larger "click here to visit" worked better than the banners and the smaller links. I think many web-users are getting/have banner-blindness.

Sometime we forget that being webmasters and spending many hours viewing web pages exactly how the general public views pages.   they see things a lot differently.  Many older web user only go online when they visit their grown up kids.  Many would use google, or choose a preferred search engine,  but they use the same configuration that the computer arrived with the day they bought it.
many get sent to MSN search every time they type anything into the search bar

I still get emails asking me how to copy and paste?    New users are loyal, if you are nice to them.

A case of not seeing the wood for the trees I think
