What do you need to do when buying a URL to point to a subpage, e.g. the url www.buythisproduct.com to point to

www.themainwebsite.com/buythisproduct

?

Yeah, it could indeed be a 301 redirect from the . Its a bit of a noob question from me and I'm not sure how else to explain it but basically I want to create a new page on a website and leaflets will be sent out with a more memorable URL e.g. www.cometothisurl.com and then the visitor will indeed be 301 redirected to the new page on the website.

Does performing a 301 redirect on the more memorable ULR require buying web space for it then purely for the 301 redirect? I was wondering if it would be possible to point the new URL at my new page without having to give that URL webspace.

A 301 will do what you are asking, but it needs to be hosted (as far as i know) as a 301 is a function of the htaccess file. There maybe a way to do something without using hosting space, but i wouldnt know how as i have always had ample hosting capability.

Yep, to redirect to a sub folder you'll need to use htaccess, so you'll need hosting for the URL.

Cheers guys. I've had URLs where they simply forward to another without web spacing but I can't remember how I've done it. For example, www.bangbangtshirts.com forwards to www.bangbangt-shirts.com without two sets of web hosting space.

That can be done through your domain registrar. But you cant do that to a sub folder (i'm 99% sure about that, so check...).

Just make sure that it is actually a 301 if you're going to use some kind of control panel URL forwarding feature.  Some of the big webhosts still use 302s.

Better to just do it yourself in the .htaccess file as discussed.
